About us

GLORIA BIGGS

stained glass artist

I work from my studio at home, seeking inspiration from coast and countryside.

I constantly develop new designs, and produce special orders from customer photographs or by researching a suitable photograph to use as a basis for a design so please contact me to discuss your requirements. Our gallery shows some of our commissioned designs ranging from dogs to flying frogs!

My interest in stained glass started over 20 years ago when I enrolled for an evening class at York College in what I thought was glass painting. It was, however, stained glass and I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges my new art brought.

My tutor encouraged me to train as a tutor myself, which I did and once qualified taught adult education evening classes at schools in York including Fulford and Oaklands.

I then moved to teaching at home (please contact me if you are interested once things return to some sort of normality because the nature of this type of tutoring means social distancing is not always possible), and the occassional small workshop locally until that outlet closed a couple of years ago.

ALLISON BIGGS

artist & craftswoman

My inspiration comes from everywhere, especially the coast and countryside. My favoured medium is pastels with which I paint animal portraits on commission (please contact me to discuss your requirements).

I also take commissions for pencil sketches from photographs such as the dog in the photograph above, and create some of the designs for mum's stained glass work including the tractor below, the dogs, and in the birds, the pheasant, Scarborough seagull and peacock.

I love making jewellery, often with my own hand-made pendants and beads. Some of these will be in our shop soon as one-off pieces to buy, along with a range of accessories and other crafted gifts, and as we continue to develop Bay Tree Arts, hopefully a return to printmaking (my only A-level) which I miss.

My interest in all things art has been with me since childhood, then continued at York College where I studied graphic design for 4 years straight from school. I have never worked full-time as an artist but hope to do so in the future. In the meantime, I will continue my part-time creative work sharing mum's studio space whilst working full-time.

The photgraph above was taken at a local creative arts fesival and inspired our design for a vintage tractor.

Many sketches including the examples above right were required before a design that could be cut out in glass and assembled suitably was possible.  We then decided to design our modern tractor to complement this, and reflect our rural position.

We are constantly inspired by our location at the at the bottom of the Yorkshire Wolds and the coast not too far away.  We often visit Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast but Bridlington is just 28 miles away with its lovely beaches and long promenade.
